American Ginseng - 1 oz. bulk (roots)

American ginseng (Chinese: Xi yang shen), held in high esteem by the Chinese, is considered a valuable yin tonic. Its cooling, mild nature is suitable for long-term use by both men and women.

An easy way to use ginseng is to break off a small piece and put it in your mouth. It will slowly dissolve as it mixes with your salvia. You don't need a very big piece of ginseng to feel the increased energy. It can be difficult to break off a thicker piece of the root so you can steam the root in a steamer basket or steam in a pan with a little water in it for a few minutes. This will soften the root enough that you can cut it with a heavy knife. Cut into 1/4 inch slices, then let dry. You can pop a piece in your mouth and let it slowly dissolve in your mouth or you can take a slice and let it steep in your morning tea. You can chew the ginseng after you drink the tea.

Ginseng can be used alone or combined with herbs such as Arillus (to improve memory), Rehmannia (for impotence), or Atractylodis (to increase energy) or you can combine with many other herbs such as Antler, Schizandra, Astragalus, Paeoniae, or Glycyrrhizae and made into a tea or tonic formula.

Research has shown that ginseng speeds the transmission of nerve impulses, increases endurance, and strengthens conditioned reflexes. It has also been shown to have many anti-stress capabilities.
